Deforestation has been a huge problem in the world for over 50 years now. Every year, swaths (forests) the size of Panama are lost. This is about 4 hectares a day. The biggest reason why forests are cut down because farmers need space for planting crops and grazing livestock. The rain forests in South America provide 20% of the world’s oxygen. Removing trees deprives the forests of it’s canopy, because the canopy blocks the sun’s rays and keeps it cool during the day and retains heat at night. Trees also function to retain water and topsoil, which provide rich nutrients to sustain forest life. When forests burn, tree carbon matter is released into the air as a form of CO2, it pollutes the world’s atmosphere. By this, it will cause temperature swings and global warming will worsen.
A more workable solution is to carefully manage forest resources by eliminating clear-cutting to make sure that forest environments remain intact. The cutting that does occur should be balanced by the planting of enough young trees to replace the older ones felled in any given forest. The number of new tree plantations is growing each year, but their total still equals a tiny fraction of the Earth’s forested land. The loss of trees and other plants and wildlife can cause climate change, desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and a plethora of concerns for indigenous people. Deforestation is considered to be one of the contributing factors to global climate change. The deforestation of trees not only lessens the amount of carbon stored, it also releases carbon dioxide into the air. This is because when trees die, they release the stored carbon.
